OVERVIEW

Love/hate the weekdays is comprised of seven different images showcasing how Twitter users feel towards each day of the week. Tweets that expressed like or dislike towards the seven days of the week in 18 different languages were indexed for seven consecutive days in December 2012. The indexed tweets(~46,000) were mapped according to their geotag coordinates in seven different canvasses (one of each day of the week) with either a coloured dot (positive mention) or a black dot (negative mention). The resulting mapped images are not only interesting because they show how people feel towards the days of the week, but also maps how often people tweet from each specific location and in which days when they do so.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Everyone hates Mondays… or so they say. To prove that, a computer code ran through tweets in real time for seven consecutive days. The resulting patterns are insights to how Twitter users in different regions feel towards the seven days of the week. This project was divided in three stages. First, the code had to parse and index tweets in real time. Second, the challenge was to select key words and expressions in 18 of the most popular languages on Twitter to  index those tweets. Third, the visualization aspect was developed. The final result is a beautiful and insightful map to people’s behaviour around the globe.

TECHNICAL INFO

Processing was used to compile a program which ran non-stop for seven days indexing tweets in real time. The resulting database was then imported onto another Processing sketch that generated the visualization.
