OVERVIEW

AquaSense is an installation whose goal is to increase awareness regarding the importance of access to clean drinking water and water quality. The piece consists of Claire, an anthropomorphic aquatic plant inside an aquarium that reacts to the public as they approach her in order to create awareness regarding this issue.

ARTIST STATEMENT

AquaSense focuses on the global issue of access to clean and safe drinking water. Sensors placed around the aquarium are used to trigger alerts emitted by the plant through LED lights around the aquarium. The lights will blink different colours at different rates as the public comes closer to it, eventually shutting itself off to protect from people when they are too close. The goal of AquaSense is to raise awareness to the issues surrounding access to and preservation of clean water. The piece is also meant to create a visually striking impact as the plant will communicate through light signals which will contrast with the water inside the aquarium and the plant itself.

TECHNICAL INFO

This installation uses an Arduino Mega controller that is connected to sensors around the aquarium, an array of LED lights the aquarium and the plant.
