OVERVIEW

Purgatory Lift was an architectural projection that took place at Ryerson University’s Rogers Communication Centre in October 2011. The projection happened on the third floor elevator doors and resembled an elevator going up and down between heaven and hell.

ARTIST STATEMENT

This projection aimed at creating an allegory of the purgatory and use an architectural feature of that building – the elevator – for that. The animation was integrated with its surroundings to showcase the allegorical contrast between heaven and hell.

TECHNICAL INFO

The projector runs a Processing sketch looping an animation of the elevator going up and down while  blending the heaven / hell background. The sketch is completely scalable so it can be adapted to any location.
