Aqua

AUDIO & VIDEO

OVERVIEW

Aqua is an experimental four-movement musical piece inspired by and comprised of water sounds accompanied by a video of water movement.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Based on Johnny Cage’s Etudes Australes, in which the composer used star charts as source material, this piece uses a disaster table from the International Disaster Database as source for the song key, mode, time signature and tempo. Global disasters caused by water or the lack of thereof (tsunamis, floods, droughts) were catalogued and mathematical equations involving the number of victims for those disasters resulted in the set of tools for composing the musical piece. Constrained by these rules, water sounds were  recorded and the piece was created as a way to respect and admire the power and force that this substance exert on us all – from life to death.
